Tesco

Tesco is the UK’s largest supermarket group, accounting for approximately 22 percent of the grocery market. Its 1,800 Tesco and One Stop stores generate an annual turnover of £32.7 billion, and the 82-year old business is the fourth largest retailer in the world.

Founded by East End grocer Jack Cohen in 1924, the chain has successfully diversified in recent years, becoming a highly competitive retailer of household goods - particularly clothing, consumer electronics, and media products, such as CDs, DVDs and games. The company’s image has also changed, from a cut-price, cheap-and-cheerful box shifter into a wide-ranging retailer with broad appeal to different sectors of the market.

The Walsall branch of Tesco opened 26 year ago. Average monthly footfall of 40 to 45,000 makes the Walsall branch above average for ‘Metros’ (high street branches). In a dynamic, commuting town, Tesco caters for the tens of thousands of people who come into the area for work every day.

“Walsall is a town where there is always plenty going on,” says Personnel Manager Denise Hands. “It’s a vibrant and busy town, and Tesco is on hand to provide a comprehensive retail service, from lunchtime sandwiches to four-course meals.”
