Walsall has a multi-skilled workforce of nearly 110,000, built upon its traditional
strengths in the manufacturing sector. In order to develop a competent and capable
workforce for the future, a wide range of partners led by the Learning and Skills
Council are focusing on progression routes for employment in targeted business
growth areas.

Through this partnership, individuals are able to develop their skills to match
the needs of employers, thus ensuring that the working population can successfully
compete for job opportunities and contribute to the success of local businesses
and the economy.
There are currently over 5,000 companies in Walsall taking advantage of the borough’s
many benefits:
- Good access to national and international markets
- Access to a large labour market of over 2 million people within the West Midlands conurbation
- Manufacturing as the traditional linchpin of the local area with 25% of employees employed in the sector
- Strong position in the region’s retail and leisure markets
- 5 million people within 45 minutes drive time
Walsall benefits from being part of a large economically active area, gaining
great strength from its proximity to Birmingham city centre, which employs over
60,000 people. Birmingham is home to top accountancy firms, legal practices, overseas
and merchant banks and venture capital institutions, deserving its status as the
country’s second city.
