Small Business Rates Relief (SBRR) came into effect from 1st April 2005 and can have a significant impact on non domestic rates charges. Details of the scheme are as follows:
What is it?
A scheme to grant rate relief to small businesses.
What is a Small Business?
A business which occupies only one property and that property has a rateable
value of less than £15,000.
Relief may still be awarded if a business has more than one property provided
that.
- Each one of the additional properties has a rateable value of less than £2200, and
- The total rateable value of all the properties occupied by the business is less than £15000
How does the scheme work?
The small business rate relief scheme is funded through a supplement on the rate
bills of those businesses not eligible for the relief. The supplement is built
into the standard non-domestic rating multiplier. A lower small business non-domestic
rating multiplier is used to calculate the bills for ratepayers who are eligible
for relief.
Relief of 50% of the rates payable is available for ratepayers occupying single
business properties with a rateable value up to and including £5,000. The percentage
of relief reduces on a sliding scale, according to the rateable value of the property,
until it is 0% for properties with a rateable value of £10,000.
Eligible ratepayers of business properties with rateable values between £10,000 and £14,999 do not get a percentage reduction in their bills but do still have their bills calculated using the lower small business non-domestic
rating multiplier.
How do you apply?

application received up to 30 September 2010 can be backdated to 1 April 2007

From 1 April 2010, one application will be required for the period 1 April 2010
to 31 March 2015.
